Pure+Applied is a +disciplinary design studio whose mission is to create spaces—physical and virtual—that invite people to linger and learn. The studio’s areas of expertise include graphic design, branding and identity, master planning and strategy, exhibition design, and content development.

Pure+Applied has made its primary work “projects for the public good,” or projects that enrich communities and provide lasting civic benefits. In part because Urshula Barbour and Paul Carlos were beneficiaries of the free education offered by The Cooper Union, they are particularly committed to amplifying the contributions of historic institutions that continue to present remarkable services.

We have worked closely with museums (Museum of the City of New York, Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum); institutions and government agencies (New York Public Library, New York City Department of Transportation, National Association of City Transportation Officials); book publishers (Abrams, Rizzoli, Taschen); architects (Lewis Tsurumaki Lewis, TWBTA); engineering firms (Arup, BuroHappold, Parsons Brinckerhoff); and artists (Gabriel Orozco, Doris Salcedo, Penelope Umbrico).
