The Brooklyn Abolitionists: In Pursuit of Freedom exhibition was the first semi-permanent exhibition at the main Brooklyn Historical Society building in Brooklyn Heights. The exhibition explored the roots of Brooklyn’s anti-slavery movement—from the end of the American Revolution to the early days of Reconstruction—through prints, photographs, census records, anti-slavery, local newspapers, and maps. Pure+Applied collaborated with Matter Practice on the exhibition graphics and the identity, which was to be used for In Pursuit of Freedom projects across the Brooklyn Historical Society, Weeksville Heritage Center, and Irondale Ensemble Project. In addition to brainstorming possible visitor experiences of the exhibition, we designed the permanent graphics on the accompanying display of the Society’s copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. Pure+Applied also designed the walking tour brochure featuring Brooklyn sites associated with the exhibition.
