Working closely with David Vega Barachowitz (NYC Department of Transportation) and Michael King (Nelson/Nygaard), we designed the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) Urban Street Design Guide to show how streets can be reconstructed and organized to prioritize safe transit, biking, walking, and public use. Our goal was to make NACTO’s guiding principles and best practices as visually evident and accessible as possible. Among other design features, we developed and deployed large, annotated illustrations throughout Guide—ultimately producing a publication that outlines both a clear vision for complete streets and a basic road map for how to create them. The book’s design became a template for NACTO publications.
